The school offers a balanced, varied and enriching curriculum in accordance with the Department Of Education guidelines and the Board of Studies Syllabus documents. Student engagement, high expectations and instilling a love of learning are our some of our teacher’s highest priorities. Besides the outstanding quality teaching occurring daily in our classrooms we also assist in the promotion of these priorities through a variety of initiatives and special programs, of which, some are listed below.
Each year teachers from the school offer special workshops targeting a variety of special skills to small groups of students. Workshops can run over sessions or several days. Some of those offered in the past include workshops on Drama, Poetry, Engineering, Photography, Art and de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats. We also offer UNSW International Competitions and Assessments for Schools and Tournament of Minds for our Stage 2 and 3 students.
LIPI – Lessons in Phonemic Instruction Program
A reading/ spelling program that runs across the K-2 classrooms. Students are grouped based on his/her digraph understanding and work through a series of lessons to improve word recognition, spelling, reading and understanding.
CATS (Comprehension and Teachers Strategies) is a Years 1-4 comprehension program that utilizes interactive whiteboard technology focusing on how students connect with and understand texts.
For over 20 years students in Year 3 have been able to learn about and grow plants in pots in a specially designated area of the school with two community members. Over 20000 plants have been planted or donated to the community.
Students from Years 3 to 6 are ability grouped four times per week for Mathematics to allow them to better meet their educational needs.
Mathletics and Reading Eggs
Mathletics and Reading Eggs are online programs that the students use both in school and at home. They allow students to progress through a variety of skill levels at their own pace.
Ensemble and Band
The band is a parent co-ordinated opportunity for students in Years 3-6. The school band is conducted by David Rooney from the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music. David teaches for two hours per week. Students perform at school assemblies, presentation and special events and in outside competitions and venues.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC is made up of two students from each class from Years 2-6. They meet each month to discuss student focussed issues and how to improve the school. The SRC also raise money for charities and for school items through variety of mufti days and raffles.
Berry students actively participate in 2 hours of fitness and sport every week including swimming, gymnastics and skill development.
We compete in many local and state sporting competitions including rugby league, football, tennis, netball and cricket. We also compete strongly in athletics, cross country and swimming carnivals.
The school also runs an Interschool Equestrian weekend in which schools compete from all over the State. Each year we have many Berry students ride.
